Whether you’re a high school student looking for a high-level community music program or a middle school student who wants to develop your musical voice, the Columbus Youth Jazz program is the place to be! Each action-packed season offers a wealth of opportunities for every student, including weekly rehearsals, performance opportunities, guest artist workshops, free Columbus Jazz Orchestra tickets, recording sessions, and more.
Instrumentalists are placed in one of four ensembles, including the nationally recognized Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra, where they perform in a big band format, or in a smaller jazz combo that leans into improvisation. We also offer specialized programs for vocalists focused on developing singing techniques across genres. GENERAL FAQS
Big Bands
The Columbus Youth Jazz big bands consist of four unique ensembles, including the renowned Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra, designed for intermediate to advanced students who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drum set. Students perform the classic big band repertoire along with contemporary music designed to challenge students at every skill level. The big bands meet from September to May and rehearse on Sundays between 4–6 p.m.
Combos
Consisting of small combos for students of all experience levels, the Columbus Youth Jazz combos are the place to hone your jazz language, improvisation chops, and close listening skills in a fun environment. The instrumental combos meet for 10-weeks each semester on Sundays from 2–3:30pm.
Vocal Lab
The Columbus Youth Jazz Vocal Lab meets on Sundays alongside the instrumental ensembles. Students learn jazz singing techniques as soloists and in a group setting. Topics covered include technique, style, improvisation, and band-leading. Each semester concludes with a final performance where participants sing with a live professional rhythm section.
